Ed Pricketts 2016 – Race Report

On the 5^th March 2016, the University of Nottingham Athletics Club (UoN AC) hosted the 12^th annual Ed Prickett relays to raise funds for the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund (RPMF), raising £150 in total. This race is a memorial to the University of Nottingham athlete Ed Prickett who was sadly killed in a road traffic accident whist at the British Universities Tack Championships.

This race is renowned for being a tough course, with the dreaded Keighton Hill towards the end of the run. Sadly the race route was altered this year, due to works around the lake but this did not seem to put off athletes with over 170 runners and 51 teams this was another successful year for the University’s Athletics club. Teams came from all around the country with university teams which included Durham, Birmingham and Loughborough.

There were some fantastic times throughout the day! The fastest male runner “Jack Hallas” of Hurricane Heroes, completed the course in a time of 9 minutes 32. In the female race we had joint winners with Jo Hickman-Dunn and Chloe Richardson both from Loughborough A, completing the course in 11 minutes 21 seconds. Our own members performed excellent as well, special mention goes to Josh Bull who was the 6^th placed male and completed the course in a time of 9:46 and also to Maddie Garner who finished as the 9^th female with a time of 12:39.

Loughborough performed brilliantly throughout the day winning both the male and the female team races, with their first teams finishing in times of 39:17 (4 legs) and 34:32 (3 legs) respectively. UoN Triathlon A came first in the inter-mural sport (IMS) category with a time of 46:32. In the mixed team category Team Ellen came first in a time of 47:58.

We would like to thank everyone for attending; we hope that everyone enjoyed the race as much as we enjoyed organising it. A new “Home Fixtures” team consisting of Allan Wilson and Rea Steinberger will now have the responsibility of organising the next Ed Prickett Relays, we wish them the best of luck and an even better day next year!

East Mids Trent Meadows – Race Report

There was a good turnout of runners on the 21st Feb for the final race of the XC season. We got taxis to the race and arrived in ample time to walk the course. The course was one of the wettest courses consisting of large sections of deep puddles and mud which proved challenging during the race.

Trent Meadows provided a fantastic end to the season. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams came first.  The men’s team consisted of Tom Wocial (4^th), Adam Thorpe (6^th), Bruce Beckett (7^th), Daniel Leng (8^th), Ben Carter (27^th), Ewan McLachan (35^th) ,  Conor Vale (36^th),  Allan Wilson (79^th). Members of the women’s team were Megan Gildea (1^st), Alice Hughes (3^rd), Katie Buckingham (6^th) and Hannah Fleet (8^th).   Well done everyone and thanks for a great XC season!

BUCS Indoors 19th – 21st Feb 2016

BUCS Indoors saw 21 University of Nottingham athletes compete in a range of track and field events, followed by the strong support in the stands, all wearing the green and gold. The indoor based event, hosted in the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, played host to some of the nation’s best athletes coming from over a 100 universities nationwide.

There were great performances from every Nottingham University athlete, which included several semi-final qualifications and five athletes qualify for finals and an abundance of personal bests!

Unfortunately, our high jumper Emma Lowry suffered what looked like a severe Achilles injury, forcing early withdrawal from the final; on behalf of all of us at the club we wish her a speedy recovery!

East Mids Colwick Woods – Race Report

On the 14^th February we gathered at 9am on the Sunday and took taxis to Colwick woods – the penultimate race of the season. This race was very close to the University so  a number of athletes also chose to cycle to the race. Colwick Woods was undoubtedly the hilliest XC race of the season, but the weather was clear and bright which meant good running conditions.

As usual there were lots of superb results from both the men and the women. The men’s team came third with Alex Bradford (2^nd) , Adam Houchell (6^th), Daniel Leng (9^th) , Joe Harrison (32^nd) and Allan Wilson (63^rd). The women’s team consisting of Alice Hughes (3^rd), Eleanor Bradbury (8^th) and Hannah Fleet (9^th) did exceptionally well to come 1^st team. Well done to everyone for performing so well on a tough course!

Steel Cup 2016 – Race Report

On 10^th February, a week before BUCS Indoors, 14 of our athletes traveled to Sheffield to run in Sheffield Hallam’s event, the Steel Cup. The points-based event played host to many universities, with Nottingham placing 10^th overall.

Women competing were: Ailsa Malcolm (200m), Victoria Reeves (200m), Katie Buckingham (800m), Beth Mortiboy (Triple Jump)

Men competing were: Olumide Ogunseitan (60m, Relay), Pierre Walker (60m, 200m, Relay),  Seb Mathewson (60m, Long Jump, Relay), Nicholas Law (60m), Makun Madar (200m, 400m, Relay), Alex Bradford (1500m), Jack Millar (3000m), Thomas Wocial (3000m), Harry Ellis (Long Jump)

Special mentions to:

• Ailsa Malcolm, setting a new personal best of 27.93s in the 200m;
• Olumide Ogunseitan coming 3^rd overall with a time of 7.13s in the 60m
• Beth Mortiboy, coming 2^nd overall with a jump of 11.45;
• Pierre Walker, with a new indoor 200m personal best of 23.07s, as well as winning his 60m race;
• Makun Madar, for putting in a real shift, competing in the 200m, 400m and the relay
• Jack Millar and Thomas Wocial, running their first 3000m indoors, both setting new personal bests.
• Men’s 4x200m relay team who came a very close 2^nd in their race.

BUCS XC 2016 – Race Report

On the 5^th of February, 48 athletes travelled down to Gloucester to take part in the marquee event of the cross country calendar: BUCS (British University XC Championships)!! After travelling down by coach on the Friday we stayed at a hotel and had a relaxing evening.

On Saturday we travelled to the BUCS XC course, which was very flat and torrential rain all day had created a completely waterlogged and extremely muddy course. There were three separate races; a men’s A race of 10km, a men’s B race of 7km and a women’s race of 6km. Our representatives for the men’s A race were Josh Bull, Jack Millar, Alistair Nelson, Adam Thorpe, Alex Bradford and Thomas Wocial. Despite the weather, everyone gave their all and it was shown with some excellent performances. Special mention to Josh Bull (62^nd), Jack Millar (106^th) and Alastair Nelson (112^th) in the men’s A race and in the women’s race, Aubree Piepmeier (34^th), Chloe Bird (61^st) and Jessica Heyward-Chaplin (143^rd). Finally in the men’s B race Adam Houchell (126^th), Daniel Leng (132^nd) and Bruce Beckett (154^th)!

The trip was wrapped up with an enjoyable social in Cheltenham.

Big thanks to everyone who turned up and represented the University, and we will hopefully see many of you again at BUCS next year.

North Mids Wollaton Park – Race Report

Despite being in the middle of exams, on the 16th January many of our athletes took some time out from revision to take part in the last North Midlands XC race of the season, which was conveniently located at Wollaton Park directly next to campus. The weather was beautiful, and the ground wasn’t too muddy creating good racing conditions.

There were lots of promising performances, especially with BUCS XC so close. The men’s team finished 5^th in this race out of 28 teams. There were great performances by everyone and in particular Jack Millar (31^st), Alex Bradford (34^th), Will Morris (42^nd) and Sam Broomhead (48^th). Even though the women team was somewhat depleted they still managed a respectable team position of 6^th with impressive individual performances. Megan Gildea finished 21^st, closely followed by Hannah Hardy (26^th), Katie Buckingham (37^th), Hannah Fleet (48^th) and Jules Servante (54^th).

Well done to everyone who competed and good luck to everyone competing on 6^th February at BUCS in Gloucester!

Leeds Relays – Race Report

The final XC race of 2015 was the XC relays at Leeds. 25 of us took the long coach journey up to leads to complete the 3.2km relay course. The men were in teams of 4 and the women were in teams of 3. Although the weather was dry but windy, the course was extremely muddy from previous rain which led to difficult racing conditions.

The competition at this race was fierce but despite this we still managed to achieve respectable results. Again, the girls did especially well with Chloe Bird (8^th), Aubree Piepmeier (9^th) and Beth Neal (13^th). The male race was particularly tough with the male team  ‘A’ finishing 28^th. This team included Jack Millar (19^th), Alex Bradford (27^th),  Adam Thorpe (28^th) and Jack Allison (31^st). Well done to everyone that came along and raced!

East Mids Holme Pierrepoint – Race Report

Holme Pierrepoint was the first East Midlands XC race of the season. We congregated bright and early on the Sunday morning and took taxis to the race start. The weather didn’t look too promising, but, thankfully the rain held off. At 11 both men and women started the race together.

We had exceptional performances from all runners and came 1^st Women’s and 1^st Men’s team. The girls in particular had very good results with Beth Neal (2^nd), Katie Buckingham (3^rd), Jessica Heyward-Chaplin (4^th) and Alex Newbury (29^th). The men’s team came back with impressive results with Tom Wocial (6^th), Jack Millar (9^th), Will Morris (10^th), Will Patterson (12^th), Joe Harrison (40^th), César Alegre (48^th), Tom Welshman (59^th), Matthew Grammatico (65^th) and Michael McGill (73^rd) bringing it home for the lads.

Thanks to everyone that competed for us and we hope to have another great turnout at the next East Midlands XC race on the 17^th January at Bramcote Park.

East Mids Holme Pierrepoint Results 2015-2016

 

North Mids Glebe Park – Race Report

Saturday 14th November was the second North Midlands XC race of the season, at Glebe Park in Corby. The weather was horrendous; raining, muddy and downright dismal.  About 20 brave souls boarded the coach to Glebe Park.  Just like in Derby, the women’s race was over a 6km course and the men’s race was over a 10km course, which had turned into somewhat of a mud bath due to the weather.

The highlight of the day came when our very own Aubree Piepmeier stormed to victory in the women’s race. Her performance was backed up by strong runs from the rest of the girls including Beth Neal, Alice Hughes, Katie Buckingham and Emma Nicholson. The men’s race was equally as exciting with Alex Bradford and Tom Wocial having a close finish, in 33^rd and 34^th place respectively. Very good performances from the rest of the team which included  Mark Freeman, Ewan Mclachlan, Joshua Headley Scott, Joe Murray, Matthew Grammatico and Allan Wilson.

Well done to everyone who came despite the miserable weather! Hope to see more good performances at the next race!
