On a sunny Saturday morning, we headed off to the worlds least picturesque town that is the one and only Corby (joking I’m sure it’s lovely really…) Unfortunately, the coach driver had never used google maps (or even a phone apparently, bless him) and so we arrived just in time for a quick warm-up and a wild wee before the girls headed to the start line! And with that little warning, we were off for 5.5km of muddy fun. Only a few of the older ones had raced this course before so it was new for most of us and seemed to have had mixed opinions with some good woodland trails but some everlasting field figure of eights! Within under 21 minutes, Lauren came storming in at 1st place with Kiri just behind, excellent performance! Just 30 seconds later Martha finished in a very strong 5th place, we seemed to have a constant stream of Nottingham vests coming over the line! In true team spirt we took places 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th with Georgia, Rosie, Ellie and Nicola. I dragged my hungover self in at 20th with Tabi, Debbie, Rachel and Ella all trying to hide from Owen and Joe’s embarrassing use of the megaphone, but all still finishing in great positions with some fab sprint finishes too! Shout out to Katie who had an amazing race even though she ran for her home club, such a strong performance!
Before we had even finished the boys were already off to enjoy a full 3 laps of the mud we had so nicely churned up. The boys race got off to a strong start with Thomas taking the lead within the first 100m which grew as the race progressed. Despite running for his home club he deserves a mention for coming home in 1st place! Close behind was a tight competition between Adam, Owen and Will having all finished close in the previous fixture. By the end of 3 gruelling laps Owen came out ahead of the unstoppable trio in 12th place, shortly followed by Will and Thorpe just behind. Putting in a great performance was Ewan in 22nd, no doubt a great confidence boost ahead of the upcoming BUCS duathlon. Looking comfortable and ever-stronger Henry came in at 31st followed by Joey in 37th. A composed Dan crossed the line in 45th with Saul and Abdullah in 50th and 67th respectively having put in some superb performances on a challenging course, showing all the training is worthwhile. Completing the mens team was a cheerful Joe in 73rd, spurred on by the crowds as he gave us a wave on the home straight. A mention to Calum who took a wrong turn on the warm-up and dropped some quick splits to make it back in time for the start took the sensible decision to take a jog around the local area and support the rest of the team. Such a strong performance for the boys at this race and I think the excellent support from the girls can take some credit for that!
Just as the rain started we headed back in the general direction of the coach (who knew where he was going to be waiting for us) before enduring a chilly minibus home and testing our patience with some interesting navigation of Uni Parks one way system. Finally we were home and ready for a hot shower and dinner!
The girls AND boys are currently in 1st team place by a long way! BIG well done to everyone who competed. I’ve linked the results and pictures below, I hope you all enjoyed it, see you at training soon – Claire + Owen 💚💚
